MEDICARE SUMMER GUIDE

Maximizing Your Medicare Benefits as We Head Into Summer

Online portals, preventive care scheduling, OTC allowances, and fitness rewards — a mid-year checklist for Medicare Advantage members

As we head toward the middle of the year, it is a great time to take stock of your Medicare plan. Many beneficiaries leave valuable health perks unused simply because they are unsure what they have or how to access them. A quick mid-year check can save you money and keep your health on track.

1. Set Up Your Online Carrier Account

If you haven’t created an online account with your Medicare insurance carrier, this is your best central hub. If setting it up feels daunting, ask a trusted family member or contact our office to help you get started. Once active, you can use it to:

  • Track usage: Monitor doctor visits, lab work, and specialist copays.
  • Check screenings: See which preventive tests you have completed.
  • Earn rewards: Many carriers offer financial gift cards or incentives for completing your annual screenings.
  • Find care: Access your carrier’s most up-to-date online provider directory.

2. Don’t Wait to Book Your Preventive Care

Annual physicals, mammograms, A1C blood sugar checks, and cardiovascular screenings are typically covered at $0 out-of-pocket under Medicare plans. However, doctor offices get incredibly busy. Well-check appointments can take two to four months to secure. If you wait until fall or winter to call, you may miss your window entirely.

Heads UpCall your doctor now to lock in your appointment date. Waiting until October to schedule something for December is cutting it very close — and some preventive services may not be available if you miss the calendar year window.

3. Spend Your Over-the-Counter (OTC) Allowance

Many Medicare Advantage plans include a dedicated OTC allowance to buy everyday health items like vitamins, pain relievers, and cold medicine. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Use it or lose it: These benefits are usually time-limited (quarterly or monthly) and do not roll over.
  • Location rules: Not all retailers accept these cards. Check your online portal or call your carrier to find eligible local pharmacies, or order items directly online for home delivery.

Good to KnowLog into your carrier’s online account to check your current OTC balance and expiration date. Many members are surprised to find they have unused funds that expire at the end of the quarter.

4. Activate Your Built-In Fitness Benefits

Medicare fitness benefits have expanded well beyond basic gym discounts. Many carriers now offer free access to local fitness centers through programs like SilverSneakers or Silver&Fit. Look into your plan’s specific portal to find out if you qualify for:

  • Free or discounted gym memberships at local fitness centers
  • Fitness tracker reimbursements (such as Fitbit or Apple Watch credits)
  • Brain-training app subscriptions
  • Digital wellness tools and online fitness classes
